Raised in the tiny New York State town of Trumansburg, Shay was exposed to classical music at an early age. His father, Angus Godwin, was a voice Professor at nearby Ithaca College School of Music. Shay began playing drums in high school with punk rock band Wire Crickets and attracted the attention of SST Records before the band was suddenly dissolved. Soon after Shay began immersing himself in jazz, classic rock, R&B, progressive rock and other styles. After studying with legendary mallet percussionist Gordon Stout at Ithaca College and earning a bachelor's degree in Percussion Performance, Shay honed his drum kit skills on cruise ships before moving to Los Angeles.

In addition to being the founder of eDrumSessions, Shay has been blessed to perform and/or record with a variety of interesting independent and major label acts. Music has taken Shay around the world, particularly with legendary Persian artist Siavash Ghomayshi. Shay also toured the U.S. and Canada playing with the opening act for Sarah Mclachlan's 2004 Afterglow Tour. National television appearances include The Sharon Osbourne Show, MTV's Advance Warning, The Daily Buzz, and The Late Late Show.
