Michael Kopelow

Michael Kopelow is a Los Angeles–based drummer and percussionist whose diverse style blends rock, jazz, and world percussion. Also an accomplished actor, Michael is known for his work in films including The Stoned Age, Point Break, Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead, and many more.

Michael began his percussion journey at the Percussion Institute of Technology, studying under legendary instructors Joe Porcaro, Ralph Humphrey, Steve Houghton, Chuck Flores, and Casey Scheuerell.

He continued expanding his musical horizons at CalArts, training with John Bergamo, founder of the percussion department; Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri, Director of North Indian Percussion Studies; I Nyoman Wenten in Balinese percussion and dance; and Alfred Ladzekpo in African Ensemble and Applied Experiments in World Music.

Beyond his formal education, Michael studied independently with acclaimed jazz drummer and bandleader Richard Alan “Dick” Berk, further deepening his roots in jazz and improvisation.

Michael is the drummer for the cinematic blues rock band Star Eyes, where vintage rock, Americana, theatricality, and humor all collide. With decades of musical experience behind him, Michael brings an instinctive, expressive style to the kit — equal parts groove, power, and feel.
