Iman Kninja
With a rat-a-tat-tat and a bah-dum-ching, Iman has been hitting everything in sight from a young age, eventually gaining the title of 'stix' from her classmates from wearing drumsticks in her socks. This didn't make walking easy, but it did make drumming a sixth sense of a sort for her. On the street, she was known as “Buckets” for busking in down town Toronto. Today, she is known for her hard-hitting chops, her technical skills and her love for the solid 7/4 time signature.
Influenced by 90’s skaa beats and early bebop jazz, this drummer chick has been compared to Adrian Young, Pat Pengelly and Janet Weisse. Iman has busked on the streets of Toronto, Ottawa, Vancouver, New York and Dublin before landing herself a weekly residency as a percussionist at a local nightclub.
Recently she has shared a stage with Melissa Ferrick, The Clicks, The Switch, ARYA, Vivek Shraya and Dance Yourself to Death and has performed with hip-hop artists K-OS and DJ Lil Jaz, DJ Zara/FunkAsia, DJ Delicious, South Beach $leaze/DJ $leaze, DJ Martin, Funk in the Jungle, Mélissa Laveaux, Amanda Rheaume, Emma Wall, Mikki Bradshaw, Uncertain Soul, Violet Static, Random Order, Fidget and is currently in ‘people you know’.
‘people you know’ has been awarded Best Toronto Band 2008 by Xtra Magazine and has played at several festivals including Bloor West Fest, S.C.E.N.E. Music Festival, NXNE, Rae Festival and Toronto PRIDE.
In an effort to give back to the community, Iman puts on annual drumming workshops teaching youth how to make and play various percussion instruments.
