David Bedell
David Bedell, aka David Small, professional drummer, instructor and recording artist, was born in Springfield, Missouri and began playing the drums when he was only 3 years of age. At age 7, David realized his calling and knew exactly what he wanted to do with the rest of his life. The desire and drive to become a professional musician was coursing through his veins! Influenced by those closest to him, David found inspiration in his great uncle and jazz musician Dave Bedell and his uncle Larry Bedell. Both played integral roles in his growth as an accomplished drummer in addition to influences from such artists as the great Buddy Rich.
In his personal life, Bedell has been inspired by the philosophies of martial arts expert, Bruce Lee. As described by David, "Bruce can be completely devastating but at the same time be just as pleasant as the sunset. He is just so smooth and powerful but at the same time he is calm and gentle!" These philosophies play out in David's unique and unparalleled drumming style as well as his teaching abilities.
David's percussion skills have earned him involvement with an impressive list of projects ranging from an Arkansas-based, country-rock project called Gray Ghost to a casino gig titled Show Stoppers where Bedell showcased his distinct talent playing to the music of artists such as Michael Jackson, Shania Twain, The Temptations and Gloria Estefan. An extremely diverse musician, David is comfortable playing a multitude of styles including country honky-tonk, funk, jazz, blues, rock and everything in-between. A musician of many hats and musical styles, he is a true kaleidoscope of talent.
I could not be more satisfied with the instruction David has provided for my son. His lessons are fun and productive and his teaching style is positive, encouraging and patient. My son's confidence has soared and all areas of his life have improved tremendously since he started lessons with David about a year ago. David's genuine, talented and kind spirit make him an exceptional drum instructor.» Michelle Bejarano - Phoenix, Az
Traveling extensively, David has played venues around the world including dates in Brazil, Japan and Bahrain in addition to a countless number of U.S. cities. He credits his unique drumming style to his diverse experiences. "I just pull from all of the influences around me from Jazz to Funk to R&B," explains David "and I turn it into my own style."
David can be heard on various artist albums including F5's 'A Drug for All Seasons', George Hughes' 'If It's Alright with You' and Avian's 'From the Depths of Time.' On the local scene, David plays with several popular cover bands including The Robert Street Band and his own R & B/Funk band, HOUSEQUAKE.
Years of experience with live performances, studio sessions and countless hours of practice has allowed David to pass on unique drum teaching skills to his students. Always honing in on his craft, David strives to be the best musician possible and never settles for average results in his students. His extensive teaching roster is filled with students of all ages. Mentoring fledgling students into expert drummers is David's greatest passion.
David has been featured in various music magazines including Modern Drummer, Drum Magazine, BURRN!, 22nd Century Rock, Metal Edge, and Hit Parader. He also has several video performances; some of which include MTV2 “Headbanger’s Ball”, FUSE Mobile, FUSE on Demand. David is also featured in the live DVD “A Tour For All Seasons”.
