Ana De Ferreira, née Ana Beatriz Sa Freire de Ferreira Azevedo was born in the town of Niterói, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She took up the drums as a teenager and wasted no time, joining several girl bands, and performing on stage within three months of taking up the instrument. In 2007 she moved to Rio proper to study philosophy at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). By 2012, she was recording with Indiscipline and Melyra. In Rio she recorded several albums and singles, toured Brazil, performing at large venues like Circo Voador and Imperator and opening for international artists like Arch Enemy.

In 2017, Ferreira flew to New Orleans to visit a Brazilian friend, where she couldn’t believe that so much music and art could exist, in a city much smaller than Rio. The next year, she flew back to New Orleans with a medium-sized bag and fooled herself into thinking she’d only there for a few months. Months became years, she expanded her musical range from metal to rock, blues, pop, and funk and each band she played with grew her repertoire and her English vocabulary. Six years later, she is a permanent fixture in the Big Easy.

Ferreira first joined some parade marching groups on snare, then became a regular at several clubs on Bourbon and Frenchmen Street, eventually sitting in and performing with dozens of bands, usually with a full kit, sometimes on the cajon. Six years later, she is fully established, highly in demand, and can be seen performing five nights a week, on average. As well as performing with the cover bands, that she enjoys, because they get people dancing, Ferreira is in five bands right now: Strange Roux, Jamie Lynn Vessels, High Black River, Southern Tragedy and Rhythm Rangers. She’s graced the stages of Tipitina’s, Maple Leaf Bar, and the Toulouse Theater.
