Martin Plante
Martin was born in Lac-Mégantic, Quebec, Canada, in 1984. He started playing the drums at age 12 by playing songs from Bon Jovi, Nirvana, Green Day, and Metallica. At age 14, he began drum lessons with the great Jean-Philippe Fortier, learning how to read music and play different styles. By 16, he landed his first big gig playing in a tribute band for System of a Down. His biggest drumming influences while growing up were Mike Portnoy, Chad Smith, Dave Grohl, Dave Welck, and Lars Ulrich. To deepen his knowledge of the instrument, Martin completed his college education in music at the CEGEP of Sherbrooke in 2007 with Chantal Simard (Répercussion), and his university studies in interpretation with Marc Bonneau (Bruno Pelleter), Michel Bernard (Maggie Blanchard), and Mario Boivin. In 2015, he won the Groove Essentials contest, the best-selling drumming method of recent decades, created by the great Tommy Igoe. He succeeded in the international category with his performance of the groove 97 (an advanced 7/8 groove). He has played with many bands and artists, gaining experience across various styles: pop, rock, metal, prog, jazz, hip-hop, Latin, and more. His experience includes cover bands, tribute bands, Top 40 groups, house bands, and live band situations like Liva and Metao. Currently, he plays for Huis, a progressive rock band, and will tour extensively with them. He also performs with Samajam, a percussive live show, as well as with artists Emmanuel Hyppolite and Justine Blanchet. Additionally, he is part of the blues/rock/funk band The Ever After and serves as the musical director of La Chapelle Church (Campus Ahuntsic). Martin has been a drum teacher for many years, since 2010, and nearly full-time. In 2016, he released a drum method called 'Méthode de batterie Martin Plante.' He teaches around 25 to 30 students each week.
