Songuero Music

Born in Springfield, Massachusetts on June 27, 1987 and raised in Paterson New Jersey, the eldest of four boys, Ruben Pizarro Jr. was always surrounded in a musical atmosphere. He listened to multiple styles of music but the most common was Latin Jazz. Nevertheless, Ruben has learned not to limit himself to one style but rather expand to many other genres.

"Sing unto him a new song and play skillfully with a loud noise".

That quote reads from Psalms 33:3 and is Pizarro's number one verse which he chooses to encourage his students with. Ruben teaches drums, percussion, piano, bass and guitar however he is a student himself. Ruben, like all musicians, continues the pursuit of learning and applying new ideas from other talented people. Karl Latham, a professional drum instructor from Jersey taught Ruben most of what he knows and is still in contact with him till this day.

"Even when you are advancing, there is nothing wrong with going back to the basics, sometimes we need to take a step back before we move forward" (Karl Latham).

"Songuero" is the nickname given to Ruben due to much of his latin influence. "Songuero" means a Songo musician (Just as a Conga musician is called a Conguero). Songo, for those who don’t know, is the name of a particular genre of popular Cuban music which has been known world wide since the early 1970s. Songo incorporates rhythmic elements from folkloric rumba into popular dance music, and was a significant departure from the son montuno/mambo-based structure which had dominated popular music on the island since the 1940s.

Every chance he gets, Ruben strives to work in excellence. He is not worried to be better than other musicians, he just wants to keep his performance sharp. He quotes: "I don't want to be the best musician there is, I just want to inspire my students and fellow musicians that there are no limits unless you set them there yourself".

Today Ruben is the MD at his church in Orlando Florida, he is also a sound/recording engineer and continues to teach private lessons as well.

"Music is not something we create, its discovered because it was given to us, I thank God for the gift He has given me and if it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be the man I am today" - Ruben "Songuero" Pizarro Jr.
