Rory James

A Native American musician from Ganado, Arizona on the Navajo Nation Reservation. I have been playing drums since the age of 13 and have been fascinated with drums and music since I can remember. Being influenced early on heavily by the nu-metal genre mixed in with pop punk, I was influenced by drummers such as Chris Adler formally from Lamb of God, Joey Jordison from Slipknot, to Tre Cool of Green Day and Travis Barker from Blink-182. Then being introduced to thrash, death, and black metal in my high school years, now heavily influenced by drummers such as Shawn Cameron of Carnifex, Krimh of Septicflesh, Diogo Mota of Gaerea, and many, many others. Listening and seeing these bands inspired me to help form my first band Mutilated Tyrant, an atmospheric black metal band from Ganado, Arizona formed in late 2013 and have been going strong ever since. Releasing a demo in 2016, an EP in 2018, and with our first full length album in the works, we have been featured in a documentary entitled “Metal From the Dirt” put out by Revolver Magazine in 2018 and making an appearance on Thomas Seltzer’s “U.X.A.” documentary on NRK TV, a television network in Norway. Being featured in such documentaries helped us make an appearance at the well-known Inferno Festival in Norway in April of 2023 playing alongside bands such as Cannibal Corpse, Dark Funeral, Wolves in the Throne Room, and Emperor.
As the years went on getting used to traveling and playing shows, I also joined a few other bands. I joined a band called Fatal Corruption in 2016, a New Mexico based heavy metal band, and departed in 2023. Releasing a single entitled “Sick of It” recorded in 2017, can be found on YouTube, and other streaming services. Our proudest achievement while I was playing with them had to be performing at Stage 49 at the Gathering of Nations PowWow in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 2019. Alongside Mutilated Tyrant, and Fatal Corruption, I joined another Navajo Nation based band called Black Mountain in 2017. A blackened death metal band based out of Pinon, Arizona. Still getting on our feet after the pandemic, we have yet to release any material and get on any social media platforms. But we have played shows such as the third annual Navajo Nation Metal Fest, and have opened for bands Unearth, and My Children My Bride. And finally, I joined atmospheric black metal band Suicide Forest based out of Tucson, Arizona in 2019. Since joining them, we have done three tours along the west coast and Canada, along with thesurrounding statesof New Mexico, Colorado, and Texas in the fall of 2019, summer of 2022, and winter of 2023. Suicide Forest is also signed with Avantgarde Records having put out multiple demos, two full length albums, with a third soon on the way.
Now being a part of the Soultonefamily, I want to thank everyone who has been a part of my journey since 2013. To my family, friends, band mates past and present, this wouldn’t have been possible without your support and your help. I chose Soultone because of the unique diversity of artists ranging from different genres of music and styles of drumming. As well as seeing another drummer in our Rez Metal scene using Soultone cymbals, I had become intrigued in getting cymbals from Soultone.I also love the selection of products Soultone has to offer ranging from brilliant to dry cymbals perfect for experimentation, which is why I chose Soultone. I wanted to try different types of cymbals I could use for my current bands and for future projects, and working with the staff at Soultoneas far as making the order and the help that they offer for their products is absolutely outstanding. I look forward to working and talking and learning from other featured artists in the Soultonefamily and being a part of Soultone for years to come.
I use Mapex drums, Evans Drumheads, Promark Drumsticks, Pearl and Tama Hardware, and now endorsed by Soultone Cymbals.
