Ricardo David Oviedo

Ricardo David, the oldest son of the Oviedo-Roca family, was born in Barquisimeto, Venezuela in June of 1981.

When he was only four years old, Ricardo began to learn to play the drums under the supervision of his father, Pedro Oviedo. When he was eleven, he had his first formal performance at a wedding with his father.

At twelve years of age, he traveled to Miami and received classes on technique and advanced rhythms like samba, jazz, jazz-fusion and funk with the renowned drummer, Hector Acuña (ex-drummer in the O.T.I. festival) and his nephew, Alex Acuña.

Two years later, Ricardo began playing with his father’s band, “Viene Jesús”, interpreting Gospel/Pop music and touring throughout Venezuela and Colombia until 1998.

At seventeen years of age, he was the drummer for the metal band “Murder Silence” and the group “Hijos de la Cruz”.

At the age of twenty, Ricardo began his studies in composition and jazz harmony at the Vicente Emilio Sojo Conservatory in Barquisimeto, Venezuela under the teaching of the famed Venezuelan jazz guitarist, Fernando Freitez. At the same time, he was contracted by various bands to play and record, thus beginning his activity as a session musician.

From 2001 to 2004, Ricardo was the drummer of the band “People”.

Starting in 2002 and continuing until current day, he has ventured into teaching drums, giving beginner lessons through technique development classes to children, teens and adults.

In 2009, Ricardo performed in the Montreal International Jazz festival and McGill University.

He has lead the workshop “Evolving on the drums” from 2010 until present at the one of the most important musical camps, EMET, that gathers teenagers from the central western region of Venezuela in Caracas where he formed part of Michael Eustache’s band.

He also performed as guest drummer together with Pedro Eustache (international flutist), Beatriz Rivas (Singer and winner of “Estrellas de la Música”), Rodner Padilla (bassist for the group “Encayapa y C4Trio”) and studied Afro-Venezuelan percussion at the Biggot foundation.
