Quinn Merchant

Quinn Merchant

Born into a musical family, Quinn Merchant was surrounded by music from birth.
From the time he was a toddler, Quinn had access to a wide-range of instruments and
ultimately settled on the drums (although he plays guitar as well). Sitting at a Roland V-
kit while his father (who is a professional touring and recording musician) played various
songs on guitar, Quinn’s earliest beats were played to classic rock artists like Bad
Company and Mountain. Quinn’s mother is musical as well, and helped expose him to a
diversity of artists, styles, and rhythms. Once he was old enough, he joined his school
band and ultimately found his home in the percussion section, and a mentor in his band
director Keith Kuczynski. Mr. Kuczynski nurtured Quinn’s talents and introduced him to
jazz and big band artists, styles that remain at the core of his musical pursuits.
Now, at 15 years old, he plays the kit in his high school jazz and pep bands, as
well as snare in the schools marching band. Quinn also is dual enrolled at West Shore
Community College where he studies music and plays in the college’s wind symphony,
jazz band, and drumline.
In between his scholastic musical pursuits, he also plays in a 4-piece rock band
consisting of local adult musicians with a median age of 50+ years old. He also performs
in his own jazz trio along with a bassist and keyboardist.
He has studied privately with renown jazz drummer and associate professor of
music in jazz studies at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, Sean Dobbins, as
well as attended camps for marching, jazz, and other percussion studies.

Quinn intends on attending West Shore Community College where he will
continue his music studies for two years, obtaining his Associate Degree, with an eye on
Michigan State University to complete his studies with a major in music and a minor in
mathematics. It has been a dream of his to march in the Big 10, and he continues to build
his musical chops with that goal in mind.
