Myron Carlos

His taste in music is as varied as you can imagine, and the list of bands that influenced him and his style are as varied as well: Metallica, Earth, Wind and Fire, Tower of Power, Dream Theater, Reel Big Fish, Paula Abdul, the Backstreet Boys, NSync, Avenged Sevenfold, and System of a Down to name a few.

There is one though, that started it all.

As he rattles off 16th notes on the high hat, while pumping the double basses, he eases off for a bit, burrows his eyes into the audience and…

There! In true rock star form he spins the stick between his fingers à la Tommy Lee, then proceeds into a maniacal solo heralded by the simultaneous crashing of cymbals.

The stick spin signifies his beginning – back to when he was in the sixth grade and had viewed Motley Crue’s performance of “Dr. Feelgood” on MTV and said to himself “I’m playing drums” – instantly igniting his passion for percussion, and sending him down his music-oriented path.

The music-oriented road during his years at Lahainaluna High School on Maui, included taking part in the jazz, concert, and marching bands. Afterwards, he attended the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where he received his Bachelor’s of Music Education degree while again participating in the various bands there: marching, symphonic, concert, jazz, pep.

Coming full circle, he returned to Lahainaluna High School, but this time on the other end of the baton as the Director of Music.

Recently, he began doing drum covers and posting them online where he has received much praise, especially with his covers going viral. He hopes to serve as an inspiration to his students to improve their music technique, and to instill within them a drive to be better.

With his education and experience behind him, as well as the raw talent that he gladly shares with his students, and the world, he would like nothing more than to keep at it for the years to come. His video view numbers, and fan comments are a good indication that his dreams will be fulfilled.
