Luke Markham was born in Syracuse, NY and began playing drums in his small high school’s band at age 10. Quickly joining the school’s Jazz band at age 12, Markham’s early roots lie mostly in Jazz music. His high school playing resume includes being elected to All-County Concert Band each year he was eligible, being elected to All-State Concert Band his final year of high school, being awarded the John Phillip Sousa Band Award, and Band Director’s Award for concert band. Luke also participated in the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) festival each year he was eligible and was awarded a perfect score on the highest possible level of snare drum solo. After a brief stint in exclusively Rock projects, Luke now enjoys and plays all styles of music including Jazz, Rock, Latin, R&B, and everything in between.
Currently studying Music Industry at the State University of New York College at Oneonta, Luke is a private student of The Mars Volta’s founding drummer Blake Fleming. Studying with Fleming has helped Markham make great leaps in technique, musicality, and playing ability along with improvisation and composition.
Luke is currently involved in a number of projects based in New York, most notably NYC rock group Vajra and the Grautet Jazz Band. He has shared the stage with the likes of Straylight Run, Ace Enders, and Good Old War.
