Kaidar Kalme
I'm Kaidar Kalme from Estonia and I've been drumming since age 7
I started on guitar but as soon as I discovered that drum class was in the next room over, my eyes went big and there's been no way back since then. My sense of rhythm had always been pretty well developed as my parents used to take me to folk dance with them since I was a wee lad.
When I got older, probably around fifth grade, I proceeded to learn drums in music school in the nearest city. The first taste of band life came a few years later. Even back then my main music taste was rock, nu metal, pop punk, old school rock and so on. So when one guy in my school started a band, British pop punk (more like poo punk, am I right?), I was immediately the top candidate for the drum chair. Poo punk notwithstanding, that's where drums became my passion.
After ninth grade I attended music school in Tartu, where I got acquainted with jazz drumming. In addition to still playing with my old band, I got to play in many different projects and styles, most of them jazz-related. But my heart remained in rock music.
Our high school band was gaining a bit of traction, and we ended up playing lots of gigs both in Estonia and abroad. Yet as all things must end, so did the pop punk period in my life - the members went on to pursue education elsewhere and soon I found myself bandless. I was then contacted by an older friend with an idea for another band. After brainstorming for genre ideas, we resolved to try a mix of pop, jazz and hiphop. We had a really great time, competing in many competitions, winning a couple and coming in second in a few others. In the end, it was not meant to be as my bandmates went to serve their time in conscription and I found myself headed to Norway in search of gainful employment. That ended up being the longest time I ever spent away from a drumkit. After returning Estonia I couldn't help myself and invested those sweet-sweet Norwegian kroner in (what else?) a brand new drumkit. I continued my drum journey independently with help from Drumeo videos and by badgering pro drummers in Estonia for tips.
After that I ended up playing in a hard rock band Trevor where I saw my biggest concerts yet, playing at festivals as well as private gigs. However, creative and personal differences abounded and I ended up leaving the band in a few years. Meanwhile, I'd gotten my foot in the door of the party rock band scene, where I played all over Estonia with a few different outfits at weddings, birthday parties etc. Having concentrated on that for a couple years, I ended up burying the hatchet with the guys in Trevor and we started to write some real heavy post grunge rock. This time around, things went even better as we managed to record an album which earned some local attention and we played some of the biggest rock festival stages in Estonia. Once again though, with success, egos grew and after another 4 years, I decided it was time to make another exit.
Around this time another opportunity appeared when I noticed that Soultone was looking for new artists - and I was on the lookout for some awesome new cymbals. And as fate would have it, I got them!
Currently you can hear me play those babies on my social media where I post covers of rock songs, as well as on stage with my current band Geko.
Years of drumming have left me no doubt: I feel most at home behind the kit and plan on doing this as long as I can still lift a stick.
