Jason Wenum

Hi. My name is Jason Wenum, and I am a Soultone Cymbals artist.

My dad’s side of the family was very musically inclined, and that exposure instilled a love of music in me young. Little did I know what a catalyst kicking around my uncle's drum kit would turn out to be. My day to day life was never without music, but it wasn't until a fateful junior high elective music class with Mr.Allsup that I knew I'd found my artistic direction... drums. This percussive path took me through marching band and drum lines at Westover High School in North Carolina and Atlantic Community High School in Delray Beach, Florida.

When I moved to Atlanta Georgia in May of 1998, I hooked up with a cover band that needed a drummer. This would become Jason’s Alibi, and we played local bars and nightclubs for about 5 years. After this I had to take some time away from playing in bands and gigs. But the passion? That never died.

Buying a new kit and practicing felt great, but I still had an insatiable itch to play live. As luck would have it, I met a like minded guitarist named Mike McIntyre out of Athens, Ga. We picked up bass and rhythm guitar players and played local spots and benefit shows as Antidote. Moving on from that, I started jamming with a couple other musician friends of mine in 2010. We played clubs for a good couple of years under a host of band names, free jamming and belting out a host of obscure covers. Guitarist Sean Humphrey and I continued jamming together for a while but life, as it does WAY too often, got in the way again.

I played, not as much and not with others, but something was missing. Creating music with others. Feeding off of their energy and creativity. Arranging melodies and tones and pitches. Bending and pushing boundaries. Developing chemistry. THAT'S the best part for me. In 2020, oddly enough during a CPR class, I found that again when I met Andrew Weir. He played bass and wanted to start a band. I was ready, willing, and able. We hooked up with Josh Fallon and my old buddy Sean on guitars and Knock Down Drag Out went to work writing. With the Covid restrictions easing, we’re finally getting to see that hard work pay off; finally out playing gigs to a lot of positive feedback!

I needed to upgrade my gigging set up, which led me to Soultone, I looked into them numerous times and liked what the Independent cymbal maker had to show me. At Sean's suggestion I approached them about becoming part of the Soultone family. The rest is history. I’m incredibly thankful for both the opportunity and my newly rekindled passion, and super excited to be playing drums for KDDO!
