DeJuan T. Mills began his musical journey playing the drums at the age of three. His musical gifts began by simply banging on his mothers pots and pans. As time progressed, he began playing the drums at his father’s church New Life Center, in Oakland California. As his gift began to take form, Dejuan has played with a plethora of bands, from Elementary School to College. While in middle school, he was a member of both the wind ensemble and the Bret Harte intermediate jazz band. In high school, DeJuan had the honor of being a member of the top wind ensemble; honor Bands, and the top jazz band. He also participated in drum corps, from his freshman year to his senior year in high school. Where he had the honor to serve as section leader for all described groups throughout high school, in doing so, he was named assistant drum instructor. Because of his extraordinary gift, he had the honor of winning the prestigious Louie Armstrong Jazz Award, and the most Inspirational Musician Award. After graduating high school, DeJuan also served as a faculty member for the Hayward California La Honda music camp for gifted students, where he had the opportunity to play with jazz saxophone great, Hal Steins. After he graduated high school, Dejuan was accepted into Florida State University, where he had the esteemed honor of studying with the well-famed jazz drummer, Leon Anderson Jr. DeJuan is currently playing drums for Open Arms Christian Fellowship Church,(with national recording artist and Pastor. Leofric Thomas), Sugar Bear, Mama Blue, and many more local artist, and has also had the opportunity to play with national recording artist, Rev. Milton Biggham .He has opened up for the Rebirth Brass Band, George Clinton, Patti Labelle, Ledesi, Frankie Beverly and Maze, Baby Face Evans, Slick Rick,has played for the President-Elect Barack Obama… and many more.
