David A. Dunbar

David A. Dunbar

David A. Dunbar was born and raised in Southern California. His affinity for music began at the age of 2 when he yearned to spend time with his musically inclined and educated father by learning to play the guitar and saxophone. Being that both instruments were just as tall as him, David later switched to the drums. By the age of 9, David began playing drums at his local church and often sat in with several of his father’s touring bands including the Sound of Salvation. Through music and church, David was afforded opportunities to hone his skills under the tutelage of Gospel Legends Andre Crouch, Sondra Crouch, The Geary Faggett Ensemble, Kenny Smith, James Cleveland, Edwin and Walter Hawkins, Rev. Timothy Wright, LaShun Pace and was greatly influenced by legendary Gospel drummers such as Joel Smith, Jeff “Lo” Davis, and Dana Davis.
Growing up in a musically inclined family with a classically trained father who played seven different instruments, David was exposed to a variety of music. But it was something about “The Funk” that always made him feel like practicing. He wanted to mimic the energy, pulsating beats, and the disciplined pocket presence that generated from drumming greats such as Raymond Calhoun, Clyde Stubblefield, Jeff Porcaro, Harvey Mason Sr., Dennis Chambers, Dave Garibaldi, Sonny Emory, and countless others. Although becoming a sought-after drummer on the smooth jazz scene, he continues to grow and develop as a performing and studio session musician. He had a career altering experience when presented the opportunity to learn and be mentored directly under the great Chris R. Coleman.
David is currently playing with Smooth Jazz Guitarist, Steve Oliver, and the band Tyghtship.
