Brian Smith

I was born in the small town of Dayton, Oh. On Feb. 13, 1983. At the early age of three I became fascinated with the drums. It started at home banging on my grandmother’s pots and pans and from then on I knew the drums would be my instrument. I got my first set of drums when I was 5 years old and I played them for hours. My mother noticed my natural talent for drums and encouraged me to keep at it. At the age of 7 I started playing drums in church at Mt. Enon Baptist Church in Dayton, Oh. The minister of music and his brother Tim who was the drummer at the time noticed my talent and I quickly became the primary drummer. By the age of 13 I was playing at church and workshops throughout the state of Ohio. At this time I was making a name for myself in Dayton and the surrounding areas as “The Pocket.” I was given this name by my peers because of my great timing and skill to LOCK the groove. At 15 I was the traveling drummer for recording artist The Ohio Baptist General Convention Mass Choir. They had two albums Its God and Praise in the House. They also had a stellar nomination and an appearance on BET’s Dr. Bobby Jones gospel show. I’ve been blessed to grace the stage and play for recording artists such as Shanica Knowles a.k.a Amber Addison of Hannah Montana, Lil J a.k.a. Devon of That’s So Raven, Judith McAllister, Kevin Bond(gospel music producer) Amante Lacey, Mimi Redd, Milton Biggham, Tonya Baker, Johnathan Dunn, David Speed and many more. Now I serve as the drummer for Omega Baptist Church in Dayton, Oh and the Dayton based band Premium Blend. I’ve traveled across the country playing the drums for many years and I will continue to do so for as long as I can. I’ve never had a drum lesson in my life, just the gift that God gave me. The keys to success are keeping God FIRST, practicing, and staying humble.

Some of my influences are: Timmy Cunnigham, Johnny Watson, Calvin Rodgers, Big Mike Clemmons, Terry Baker, Gerald Heyward, Spanky, Pudge, Jeremy Haynes, Phil Collins, Buddy Rich, Billy Cobham, Dennis Chambers, Tony Roster Jr., Steven Williams, Aaron Spears, Terry Bozzio, Ricky Lawson, Marvin McQuitty, Brian Frazier-Moore, John Blackwell, Lil John, Chris Coleman and many others.
