In June 2014 Brandon Karns was given the chance to drum for thrash crossover legends D.R.I. Since that time Brandon has played around the world. From the first show Brandon Played with D.R.I. they only practiced five hours before the set and he has been running with them since.
Brandon finds much of his inspiration from bands like Meshuggah, Animals as Leaders, and Intronaut, that gave him the desire to better his drumming abilities and musicianship in general. It was the through a common interest with other friends that he joined and continues to play with his band Plan for the Mutiny.
Brandon Glen Karns was born in Santa Rosa, California. His parents were still students at Piner High. Brandon spent the first fourteen years of his life living in Valley Oak Apartments, a low income housing development in Santa Rosa. Brandon grew up below the poverty line, in a household with a younger brother. Brandon’s mother worked multiple jobs to provide for the family, while Brandon’s stepdad worked part time and played in multiple local bands as a bass player. It was Brandon’s step father Steve who first introduced him to musicianship and metal music, by taking him to the various shows he played in the bay area.
Brandon’s drumming career was jump-started at the age of 16, when he bought his first drum kit, a used Tama swing star. At the age of 17 Brandon took a step further and joined the school band, learning the quads. Brandon never could afford to take drum lessons, so he used his knowledge from class to read drum exercises and practice regularly. In doing this, Brandon networked with many other high school drummers and formed many side projects. Throughout high school Brandon kept up his practices. By the end of high school, Brandon had set himself up as a known metal drummer in Santa Rosa.
After high school, Brandon joined the work force for two years before starting college at the local Santa Rosa Junior College, where Brandon studied improv Jazz. Brandon worked full time, eventually finding himself at Lagunitas Brewing Company in addition to being a full time college student. This left little time for Brandon to play in any touring bands; however he did play with a couple of local bands. These bands include Outrage and, the band that became his inspiration for bettering his drum skills, Plan for the Mutiny. After Junior College Brandon went on to Sonoma State University and graduated amongst the top of his class with a degree in Sociology.
After college, Brandon continued his studies on the working environment, and how it shapes the morality of the individuals involved in the working environment, to meet the needs of the organization over the needs of the individuals. He lowered himself to a part time position at Lagunitas Brewing Company and took a job as a residential youth counselor at a level 12 residential teen treatment facility. Brandon also began volunteering at a local emergency children’s shelter, where he role modeled for developing children.
As Brandon progressed after college, he began studying drums religiously again, and found himself auditioning for the world famous cross over thrash band Dirty Rotten Imbeciles. After several demo tapes and recordings to prove his skills to D.R.I. guitarist Spike, Brandon received a call to go to Texas to play his first gig with D.R.I. only eight hours before the plane left, even though they had never rehearsed together. From that time on Brandon was the new drummer for D.R.I, touring the world and being released on their new recording with three new songs and a couple of re-released songs.
