Adam Riviere, world percussionist, audio engineer and composer boasts over 25 years of experience, 15 published albums and numerous collaborations. Riviere began playing the piano at the age of ten, which led to a love of percussion and throughout the years that followed, he studied more than 30 world instruments. Riviere’s style could simply be described as “Electro Percussive Ambient Trance.” He infuses electronic sounds with a plethora of acoustic world instruments. His music sounds as unique as the instruments he plays. Styles he performs and infuses during his performances include Middle Eastern, African, Classical, Celtic, Latin/Afro-Cuban, Caribbean, Electro Acoustic, and Native American. Some of the percussion instruments he plays belonging to the styles include: •Middle Eastern: Egyptian Tabla (doumbek), Dhola, Zils, Tar, Mahzar and Riq •African: Djembe, Udu and Embira •Classical: Marimba, Xylophone, Timpani, Cymbals, Snare and Triangle •Celtic: Bodhran and Bones •Latin/Afro-Cuban: Congas, Berimbau, Shekere, Pandeiro, Shakers, Clave, Cowbell, Agogo and Cajon •Caribbean: Steel Pan (lead tenor) •American: Jazz Vibraphone, Native American Flute and Drum set •Other Instruments: Didgeridoo, Tongue Drums, Classical and Electric Guitar Riviere received his undergraduate degree in Music Business in 2000 from Butler University, where he also played with the Butler University Percussion Ensemble and the Symphonic Wind Ensemble. By 2003, he completed a graduate degree from the Indiana University-Purdue University School of Music in Music Technology. While at IUPUI, Riviere served as an Assistant Director and tutor for the Indiana University Purdue University Urban Percussion Ensemble. Not only is Riviere a live performer, he is a trained Audio Engineer as well. He has experience with All Systems Go, owned by Ted Gregorek, including In-House/Remote recording, front of house/monitors, professional, commercial and domestic audio installations, consultation and rigging. He currently manages Playground Productions, LLC, experience includes In-House/remote recording, sound engineering, front of house/monitors, pro (digital) audio tutoring/consultation/service repair, composing, private/class instructing. Even though Riviere currently performs solo, in the past he performed with world-renowned artists such as percussionist Badal Roy who performed and recorded with Miles Davis and flautist and saxophone player Steve Gorn who performed and recorded with Paul Simon. Riviere also performed and recorded with groups including: •Global Groove: World music fusion of percussion, didgeridoo and Native American Flute •Rabid Velvet Weasels: Electro-Alternative-composer, programmer and percussion •hip-O: Eclectic Rock: drum set and percussion •Heart Wind: Native American Flute Music/Fusion of Native American Flute, percussion and didgeridoo (presently performs periodically with the group) •Rushingwind & the Native Groove: Native American Fusion – world percussion, didgeridoo, Native American style flute •Troika: Eastern European Gypsy Folk Group – cajón, riq, doumbek, tar, didgeridoo, bodhran and bones Since 2009, Riviere actively participates and performs for and with the Indiana Native American Cultural/Business Association and the American Indian Theatre Company of Indiana under the direction of Rebecca Victorino Martin. Notable events Riviere recently participated in include: •Performance at the Eiteljorg Museum Indian Market with Branches Breath in 2011 & 2012, an event where Native Artists from across the country come to sell their art, share their stories, dances and songs. Opened for Pamyua and Brulé. •Performance for the Native American Heritage Days on August 27, 2011, a day proclaimed as Native American Heritage Day in Indianapolis by Mayor Gregory Ballard •Performance at the Indiana State Museum for the Native American “Dance Circle” on November 4 & 5, 2011. The event in November 2010 opened with a proclamation by Governor Mitch Daniel’s office to proclaim November as Native American Heritage Month in Indiana •Performed at the “Wiping Away the Tears” Symposium Reception at Purdue University on November 5, 2011 with special guest speaker Suzan Harjo •Artist in Residency program with the Partnership 2Gether Western Galilee Central Area Consortium. Performed at Hesher Gaziv during the Fence Festival, taught a Native American Style Flute workshop in Yas’ur, in Shiekh Danun at an Arabic community school introduced West African drumming, Australian Aboriginal didgeridoo, Latin/Afro-Cuban drumming, and cabaret Middle Eastern style percussion preparing them for their school concert in May 2012 •Performed at the Spring 2014 Jacob’s Ladder Festival with Hagit Rosmarin & Gil Bohadanna •Performed at 21st Annual Silk Road Ensemble Festival at the Buskirk Chumley Theatre in Bloomington, IN July 20, 2013 •Performed alongside Native American Music Award winner Steve Rushingwind at the 2014 Sunwatch Flute Festival in Dayton, OH in his latest project Rushingwind & the Native Groove •Performed at the 2014 Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards RBC OHSHKII awards night Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada with Rushingwind and the Native Groove •Performed with Rushingwind and the Native Groove at RNAFF (Renaissance of the North American Flute Foundation) Fest 2014 in Townsend, TN, and accompanied R. Carlos Nakai during his performance and closing ceremony •Produced, directed, and performed at the Opening Ceremony for Serendipity Festival 2014 alongside Suzanne Sterling, Steve Rushingwind, Indy Tribal, and Rhythm Conspiracy When not concentrating on writing and performing his music, Riviere devotes his time to the community and various charities such as: •Organized and executed a successful benefit concert, Haiti Aid following the Haitian earthquake •Performed at a Powwow demonstration for the American Indian Society at the American Indiana Center Inc. telling the tale of the Lakota Courtship Flute and other tales from different tribes •Participates annually in the Lotus Blossom Bazaar in Bloomington, IN an educational outreach program in which he educates youths about world instruments, music and culture. •Performed for the Kilimanjaro Education Outreach (KILEO) Taste of East Africa charity dinner in Bloomington, IN •Performed for the Helping Hands Festival by Global Gifts, a fair trade corporation •Performed for Circles of Life, a church-based charity devoted to helping battered women •Leads the Monrovia High School Marching band’s percussion section for its annual band camp and rehearsals throughout the season •Has taught hand drumming and techniques to inner city students at the Indianapolis Metropolitan High School •Presents culture and music through world instruments to the Center Grove Montessori School (centergrovemontessori.com/) •Hosts a community drum circle, live local bands, and a local art exhibit during his open house at Playground Productions Studio in the Irvington Coal Factory called 3rd Friday at the Playground •Hosts a Middle Eastern drumming and dance gathering to support ISAMETD (Indiana State Association of Middle Eastern Teachers and Dancers) every 2nd Sunday at the Playground As well as involvement in charities and the community, Riviere is well-known in the local community, throughout the state and even internationally for participating in mind, body and soul healing practices such as Aura Cleansing and Chakra Balancing, providing live music at yoga classes, leading drum circles, participating in kirtans and conducting workshops for beginner, intermediate and expert stages of African drumming, Latin/Afro-Cuban drumming, Middle Eastern drumming, didgeridoo and Native American Flute.
