Mercutio

Mercutio is a pop-rock band from Virginia and their self-titled album is their debut album ready to show you who they are. This band puts an indie and folk twist to their songs to keep it cool while still being able to appeal to the masses.
The album opens up with “Hypotetical” which starts off with a heavy guitar riff and some group vocals, which is always a great way to start off an album. The track stays upbeat and shows you that Mercutio’s album is going to rock. “I Love Everybody” is a catchy song that makes you want to dance. The nice addition of some clean harmonies with the chorus makes you want to learn every word and sing along. Then there is “Lena Rose” which is one of their lyrically more up-lifting songs. This song rocks and still keeps a positive message, and some really nice drum beats. Keeping that indie-folk vibe is “Carry On”, it shows you how Mercutio has the ability to combine the two genres while still making it something everyone will listen to. “Fallen Angel” starts off with some epic vocals and shows you the pop-rock side of this band. This is one of the more upbeat rocking songs on this album. There is always a track on an album that shows off the skill of the instrumentalists and “Going Off Again” is it. Some very attractive guitar riffs, sexy bass lines, and impressive drum beats fill this track. No one is trying to out-shine anyone else but they are doing what the song calls for. “Sara” starts off a little slow then goes right back into the upbeat vibe Mercuito seems to love to use in this album. This also may be one of the most catchiest choruses they have on this album. Who doesn’t love banjo? “Breathless” has some banjo for you and it’s a great little folk touch to this album. Even though it seems to be a slower track compared to the rest this is a very groove filled song that will keep you bobbing your head. Following the flow of the last song, “Second Chances” brings it down a notch and slows the album down. This is a nice relaxing song to break up the album a little bit, it is very well placed. Then to pick up the pace a little is “Say You Will”, it seems to be more on the upbeat side and the double bass used in it proves that. Vocally, this is probably my favorite track, the vocalist hits some very nice notes without going overboard. Nothing like a great bar song, “Stubborn Love” is just one of those songs you can see an entire bar singing along to. Nearing the end of the album is “The Sun King Loves You More”, this track brings the album back down a little and shows off the guitarist’s skills with some impressive solos. Plus, it has one of the best vocals and harmonies I heard on this album. The album end with “Without a Sound” which is a slower track compared to the beginning of the album but then at the end picks up a lot. This was a good way to end an album.
This album was a great listen. It could use a little work with the production, at times the instruments were tough to hear or the vocals were tough to understand but for a first album this is impressive. This band is definitely going to be around for a while and doing great things with their musical careers, you can tell.
